Scholarship Overview: A scholarship to honor Navy Sailors by providing post-secondary scholarship support to their children pursuing a STEM or health science degree at an undergraduate college or career training school.

Scholarship Details:

Brown Hudner Navy Scholarship Foundation is not accepting new applications for the 2024-25 academic year; only renewal applications will be considered. Our application is open from January 1 to March 1 each year.

Inspired by the true story of Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, this scholarship aims to honor Navy Sailors by providing post-secondary scholarship support to their children.

To be eligible to apply, an applicant must meet all of the below eligibility criteria:

  • Child of an active duty, reserve, honorably discharged, or fallen U.S. Navy Sailor
  • GPA of at least 2.0 (cumulative and unweighted on a 4.0 scale)
  • Family adjusted gross income less than the limit based on the annual Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy’s salary
  • Planning to pursue a STEM or health science degree and attend an accredited undergraduate college or career training school in the upcoming academic year

Application will require:

  • Transcript: Your transcript must be dated after January 1, 2023 and show your full name, school’s name, most recent grades, and a cumulative GPA on a 4.00 scale.
    • If your school does not provide cumulative GPAs on a 4.00 scale (i.e. GPA or transcript is either weighted or on a 100-point scale), then you will need to provide a signed letter from a school administrator verifying your cumulative, unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale in addition to the transcript document.
  • 2021 Federal Tax Return: Both pages of the 2021 Federal Tax Return (form 1040) that the applicant is claimed on or the Statement of Non-filing of a Federal Tax Return form that can be found in the application.
  • Qualifying Military Parent Service Documentation:
    • Military parent no longer serving in the Navy:  DD214 (Member-4) form.
    • Military parent is currently on active duty OR is a drilling reservist:  Statement of Service (dated within 90 days of March 1, 2023).
    • Military parent was killed in action, killed in service, or killed in training: Report of Casualty DD Form 1300

Award Details:

Scholarship awards are based on a competitive scholarship model, and applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and complete an application with supporting documents. Recipients are required to maintain eligibility and renew their scholarship each year but are only required to submit a comprehensive application the first year they are awarded. Each scholarship recipient is eligible for four paid awards, and awards do not need to be awarded in consecutive years.
