P. Buckley Moss Endowed Scholarship 

Scholarship Overview: High school Seniors with a language related learning difference who plans a career in the visual arts.

Scholarship Details:

 In keeping with the goals of renowned artist P. Buckley Moss, who struggled with dyslexia during her school years, this scholarship represents her dedication to young people who have learning differences and have aspirations for a career in the visual arts.  The P. Buckley Moss Endowed Scholarship provides up to $1,000.00 financial award annually to one graduating high school senior who plans a career in the visual arts. Awards are sent directly to the college to be applied towards tuition.  The scholarship may be renewed for up to three consecutive years based on eligibility. The amount of the award may vary from year to year. The application period is January 1 through March 31 annually.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Verified language-related learning difference
  2. Graduating High school senior
  3. Verified financial need
  4. Acceptance to an accredited four-year college or university or two-year community college in the United States.
  5. Pursuing a career in a visual arts field with art classes taken each semester

Eligibility Definitions:

  1. Verified language-related Learning Difference: This scholarship focuses on students with language-related learning differences. Learning differences are defined as disabilities in specific language processing, including but not limited to dyslexia, written expression, reading comprehension, central auditory processing, visual perception, word recognition, and sequencing. Verification of such diagnosis must be provided by a case manager or counselor. Students with ADD or ADHD alone are not eligible.
  2. Visual arts is defined as: art forms that create works which are primarily visual in nature, such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, and photography. Students in the performing arts are not eligible for this scholarship. Performing arts include dance, music, opera, drama, spoken word and circus arts. Filmmaking is only allowed if the student was the main creative force behind the project, such as the director. If the student was acting in someone else’s film, they are not eligible. Applied arts are also not eligible. Applied arts include industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, and interior design.

 

Application Requirements 

  1. 4 copies of the completed P. Buckley Moss Endowed Scholarship Application Form
  2. For language-related learning disability verification – Provide a letter (maximum two pages) from your case manager or counselor which details diagnostic information and progress. Do not send an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  3. High school transcript – unofficial.
  4. Provide 2 letters of recommendation; one from a faculty member at your school and the other one from a person who knows you outside of the school setting, who is not a relative.
  5. For Financial Need Verification – Provide parents’ most recent 1040 tax form. Please cross out social security number.
  6. Provide printed portfolio consisting of 4 to 6 photos of visual art projects.
  7. Provide essay responses to the following three questions (see below)
  8. Provide a copy of the acceptance letter from your accredited four-year college or university or two-year community college

Essay Details:

Provide essay responses to the following three questions (be specific and convincing):
1. Select three words that best describe you, and provide evidence and examples of these qualities.
2. Explain your specific learning disability, how it has challenged you, specific strategies you have used to cope, and the effects it has had on your life.
3. Where do you intend to go to school and why there? How do you plan to use your artistic talent? (What do you see yourself doing in 10 years with your art?)

Award Amount: $1,000
